About TravisBSD

Here we will detail the operating specifications of the TravisBSD server cluster, as well as some information about us in general.

We currently run a network of several servers operated out of a small midwest network operations center. These machines are each dedicated to one or two functions, and are on a cable backbone with T1 speeds.

Power is supplied by an UPS split between two machines. Each UPS is rated to last one hour in case of outage, we are currently purchasing and installing a gas powered generator to power systems during extended outages.

Servers are monitored 24/7 by automated monitoring systems, and during working hours by the systems administrators. In case of emergencies, administrators are notified and can be called back to fix any problems.

Backup systems include two redundant RAID-6 arrays and NFS servers, hourly SQL backups onto a hard drive, and bi-hourly SQL backups to external RAID systems. File backups are done on a scattered routine schedule, so that nothing happens at exactly the same time, but roughly once per day, once per week, and once per month.

All servers are built on top of BSD variants, each used for it's own purpose. The core web and fileservers are run on FreeBSD's of various versions which we find suited best for different tasks. The firewall and gateway routers are run on OpenBSD machines using CARP and pfsync.

Random Fortune

"And what will you do when you grow up to be as big as me?"
asked the father of his little son.
"Diet."
